Our practice test questions help you study effectively because you’re learning the information while understanding the test question formats. That’s one of the main reasons why practice tests make a difference when studying.

When you know what to expect, you’ll reduce your anxiety. You will enter your G1 test centre feeling more prepared and that you’re ready for the official test. When you practice online, you see how much easier it is to pass your G1 test.

Ontario has a Graduated Driver’s Licence (GDL) program. This means whether you’re a citizen or have migrated to Canada, you must follow certain steps to obtain your full five-year Ontario driver’s licence.

The first step is the knowledge test – a 40-question written test of your knowledge of the rules of the road and road signs based on the MTO handbook. In addition to information on Ontario’s rules of the road, the MTO handbook also covers general information like:

  • Safe and responsible driving
  • Traffic signs and lights
  • How to get your car, van, or small truck licence
  • Information for trailers and off-road vehicles
  • How you could lose your licence

To pass this knowledge stage of the GDL process, you need to prepare. But the information is also useful for a lifetime of driving support.

The information you learn in these practice tests will equip you for life. You learn all the Ontario driving rules and road sign meanings to ensure that you’re a safe driver for yourself and others on Ontario roads and throughout Canada.

It’s more than passing your G1 test. Let us help you prepare for the test and a lifetime of driving safely. Study from our bank of 2024 G1 practice test questions and try simulation tests to see how ready you are for the real test.

If you live in Ontario and would like to be able to drive, you need to get an Ontario driver’s licence.

Here’s a quick run-through on the types of Ontario driving license and the process to get one.

What types of Ontario driver’s licence are there?

It’s a computer-based touch screen test that must be done in person at a Department of Transport service area. Tests must be booked in advance which you can do on the relevant state website or by phone.

The licences available are based on the types of vehicles you want to drive. There are two common classes of Ontario driver licences. They are:

  • G Class (G, G2 and G1 licences) for driving cars, vans, and small trucks
  • M Class (M, M2 & M1 licences) for riding mopeds, motorcycles, and motor scooters

There are also A Class and D Class licences for commercial/large trucks. (You must have held a G or M licence before you can upgrade to Class A or D.)

How do I get my Ontario Drivers License?

First-time drivers

First of all, you must be at least 16 years old to apply for a licence. The process will depend on whether you are applying for your first licence or you have had a licence before.

As a first-time driver, you will need to pass a vision test and then you can apply for the licence.

When applying for the licence, you will need to book and pay for a driver knowledge test online and choose a Driver Test Centre close to you. This is the G1 test, the first part of the graduated licensing system. On the day of the test, you will need to bring with you proof of name and age, and a document with your signature to the Driver Examination Centre.

Once you pass the G1 knowledge test, you will be given your G1 learner licence. This allows you to start practicing driving on specific Ontario roads under the supervision of a person with a full G class licence. You can spend 8-12 months in this class before being eligible to take the G1 road test. You get a G2 licence with fewer restrictions than your G1 learner’s licence if you pass. After a year at G2, you can sit the G2 road test and if you pass, get your full G Class licence.

You have a licence from another country

If you’re from a country with a reciprocal agreement (e.g., USA, Australia, Korea, France), you can get an Ontario Licence without going through the regular licensing process. The licence you qualify for will depend on your driving experience.

If you’re not from a country with a reciprocal agreement, you will need to get a detailed written confirmation of your driving experience from the relevant authority in your home country. Your years of driving experience will determine if you need to do the G1 test, and where in the graduated licensing program you will fall to get your Ontario drivers licence.

You have a licence from another province in Canada

This also depends on your previous driving experience. You must have a current licence (and if expired, has to have been less than 1 year ago). If you have 2+ years of experience, you could get a full licence and not need to take the Ontario written driving test. With less than 2 years experience, you can get a G2 or M2 licence. Once you get to the 2-year mark, you can take the G2/M2 road test for your full licence.

You can find a detailed breakdown from the Ontario MTO on how to get a G licence as a new driver.

To get your full G licence, you must pass a written knowledge test and two (2) road tests. This is part of the Ontario graduated driver’s licensing (GDL) program for new drivers.

The GDL is a system to practice driving at different stages before you can apply for and get a full licence. With each stage of the GDL process, there are restrictions on what you’re allowed to do, how, and when. The restrictions based on the GDL stage you’re at cover:

  • Whether you can drive alone or not
  • Who can be in the car with you (e.g., a passenger with a full licence is required to be in the vehicle for G1 licence holders)
  • Where and which roads you can drive
  • What time of day or night you’re allowed to be out on the road

You can find out more about the restrictions for each stage at the MTO website here.

The stages of the Ontario graduated driver licensing program

First Stage – G1 Licence

The G1 licence is the first stage and requires you to pass a vision test and the G1 written test. Once you pass the written knowledge test, you get a G1 licence – a learner’s licence. A G1 licence allows you to work on your driving skills under the supervision of a fully licensed driver, that is, someone who holds a G Licence.

You can then take the G1 road test in 12 months (or 8 months if you get driving lessons from an approved driving school).

Once you pass the G1 test, you get a G2 Licence.

This stage is critical if you have no previous driving experience, and you want to get an Ontario driver’s licence. If you don’t pass the G1 knowledge test, you can’t move further. Our G1 practice tests help you get ready for the G1 knowledge test so you can pass and get your G1 learners licence.

Second Stage – G2 Licence

You have fewer restrictions driving with an Ontario G2 licence. For e.g., you won’t need a fully licensed individual in the car with you; you can drive on highways; and there are no restrictions on driving at night.

Final Stage – Full G Licence

After 12 months at the G2 stage, you can apply to sit the G2 road test. If you pass, you get your full G licence.

What happens to the GDL if you have a licence from another country?

If you migrated to Ontario from another country, you might need to go through the graduated licensing system. But where you are in the graduated licensing system will depend on your driving experience. If you’re from a country with a reciprocal agreement, then you won’t need to go through this process. If not, you will need written confirmation of your driving experience and follow the relevant GDL procedure.

Less than 12 months experience in the last 3 years:

You need to get 12 months of driving experience in Ontario to qualify to take the G1 road test.

12-24 months experience in the last 3 years:

You qualify to immediately sit the G1 road test. If you pass, you’ll get a G2 licence.

24 months and more driving experience in the last 3 years:

You may take the G1 road test and get a G2 licence. Or you can take the G2 test and get your full G Ontario driver’s licence.

For more information on the graduated licensing program and how to get a driver’s licence in Ontario, visit the ServiceOntario site.

Many persons searching online for ‘g1 written test Ontario,” are doing so because they’ve been told that they need to pass the Ontario G1 test to get their licence.

Ontario has a graduated driver licensing program that takes new drivers through a process for around 2 years to get to a full licence. The first stage of that process is getting a G1 licence so you can start practising your driving skills on the road. You must pass the G1 written test before you can get the G1 licence.

So …

What is the G1 test?

The G1 test is the written knowledge test of the rules and regulations for driving in the province of Ontario. It tests your knowledge on safe driving practices, traffic signs and lights, and other driving rules.

The G1 test is available in seventeen (17) languages.

When you’re ready to “book g test Ontario,” then you can book your preferred test date online. You’ll sit the G1 knowledge test at a Driver Examination Centre.

How is the G1 Test structured?

The format of the G1 knowledge test is simple. It has 2 parts, with each part having 20 multiple-choice questions. The first 20 questions cover your knowledge of Ontario road signs. The second set of 20 questions assesses your knowledge of the rules of the road.

You must get a minimum of 80% on each part of the test (16 of the 20 questions correct) to pass and get your G1 licence.

Studying for the G1 test

You can start studying for the G1 test by familiarizing yourself with the contents of the official driver’s handbook. This is the 2024 official MTO driver's handbook (what some call the Ontario G1 test book). It is available on the Ministry of Transport website as well as the official website of the Government of Ontario.

But the real studying takes place when you can practice test questions that are like the real test. That’s where free online G1 practice tests like the ones we have on G1 Practice Test Canada come in handy.

The G1 knowledge test is not something you can just get up, book the test, and expect to pass. Even if you’ve driven in other provinces or countries, you need to know what is required for Ontario roads.

That requires studying the Ontario driver’s handbook.

But simply reading the book is not the best way to prepare for the test. You need practice tests and G1 mock exams to get you ready for the official test. Here’s how to pass your Ontario G1 test on your first try.

1. Don’t rely solely on the handbook

Yes, the handbook carries everything you’ll be tested on. But reading the handbook alone won’t necessarily help you retain the information. Plus, it’s harder to understand what the test will be like from a book, so you may end up with several unpleasant surprises on test day.

2. Study everything … because the questions are random

The 40 multiple-choice questions on the test can come from any section of the handbook and even with the same question in multiple ways. You cannot predict which questions you will get on the official test. So, it’s important to learn everything in the handbook. That’s where our G1 practice questions make your life easier.

3. Get the right type of practice questions

All practice test sites are not designed equal. And many require that you pay to access their bank of G1 test questions. Plus, they aren’t designed to help you prepare the right way for the G1 test.

To combat all these issues, we make sure:

  • Our G1 tests are accessible anytime, anywhere.
  • That the tests are randomized (like the real thing).
  • We use a similar scoring system to the official test on our mock tests.
  • Our test questions are very much like the real ones.

This ensures you know exactly what to expect and there are no surprises about the format.

4. Practice, practice, practice

It’s a fact that practice tests improve test results. It doesn’t matter what kind of test it is. So, when it comes to a computerized multiple-choice test like the G1 test, you should take advantage of every opportunity to practice the test questions.

Our platform is designed to teach you and improve retention while you learn. That ensures you can interpret most questions no matter how they may be phrased.

Can you pass the G1 test without practicing?

We cannot guarantee that you will pass on test day because anything can happen. What we can promise you is that if you study all the practice test questions and try and pass all the free practice tests, you’ll be in a much better position to ace your knowledge test than most Ontarians.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs – G1 Practice Test

The first stage of the Canadian graduated licensing program in Ontario starts with passing the G1 test. This allows you to get your G1 license. Once you get this G1 driver’s license, you can start learning to drive G-class vehicles. These include cars, vans, and small trucks. Failing the G1 written test means you can’t start the physical aspects of learning to drive in Ontario.

Taking the test requires preparation, not just trying your luck. Otherwise, you’ll be booking another test date at a G1 drive test centre near you. The failure rate for the driver license test is rather high in Ontario – anywhere between 50%-70%. The reason is that some questions are a bit tricky. And if people only use the MTO handbook, they won’t realise that’s a part of the reason why they’ve failed.

The G1 drive test has 40 multiple-choice questions in two sections – Part A and Part B. You have to pass each section independently to be considered as passing the G1 written test. The official test is available in 17 languages.

The first 20 questions cover road signs. The next 20 are questions on the rules of the road. These questions are generally specific to each province. This allows them to account for unique requirements within each province, like Ontario.

You can only get 4 questions per section wrong for a total of 8 incorrect answers. That means you need to get a minimum of 16/20 on Part A – road signs, and 16/20 on Part B – rules of the road.

The minimum passing score for the G1 test is 80%. You need to answer 16 questions correctly in each section of the test (16/20 x 2) to get a pass.

Yes, you do. With a high failure rate, you can see why we recommend this. You can start by reviewing the MTO driver’s handbook, which covers all the material that will be on the G1 written test.

Then, try our G1 practice questions to help you study and prepare for the actual test. It’s proven to increase your odds of passing the official G1 knowledge test.

Once you’re ready, you can book an appointment online so you can take the written driver’s licence test.
