How it is measured: every answer to one of the 130 Ontario traffic-sign questions on this site, counted on 2 November 2026, with at least 1,400 answers behind every sign. A sign’s rate is the share of its answers that were wrong. The easiest signs, for comparison: the stop sign and the hospital sign, each missed under 1% of the time.
Every sign on the G1 test belongs to one of these families. Learn the shape and colour first and half the question answers itself.
| Family | Shape and colour | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Regulatory | Usually a rectangle or square, white or black background. A green circle means you may or must do what is shown; a red circle with a line through it means it is not allowed | A direction that must be obeyed: speed limits, stop, yield, turns, parking, lanes |
| Warning | Usually a yellow diamond with black letters or symbols | Dangerous or unusual conditions ahead: a curve, a turn, a dip, a sideroad, a narrow bridge |
| Temporary condition | Usually an orange diamond with black letters or symbols | Road work, diversions, detours, lane closures and traffic-control people on the road |
| Information and direction | Usually a green rectangle with white letters; other colours point to facilities, services and attractions | Distances and destinations, exits, routes, services |
| Other signs | The slow-moving vehicle sign is an orange triangle with a red border; HOV lane signs; emergency-response numbering; bilingual signs | A vehicle ahead travelling at 40 km/h or less; who may use a high-occupancy lane; routes for emergency crews; signs in both languages in designated areas |
Source: The Official MTO Driver’s Handbook, Signs chapter, ontario.ca, updated 9 February 2023, read 2 November 2026. The handbook says that by the end of the chapter you should know the difference between regulatory, warning, temporary condition and information and direction signs.
One of the two parts of the knowledge test is traffic signs. Here is what to expect and how to use this page.
Two parts, one pass mark. Ontario’s knowledge test covers the rules of the road and traffic signs. DriveTest says you need at least 80% to pass, a test typically takes 20 to 30 minutes, and a pass is valid for one year. Practice guides describe the signs part as 20 questions; the province does not publish the split, so study every family, not a number.
What a question looks like here. The sign’s picture, the question “What does this sign mean?”, four answers, and the explanation the moment you answer. All 130 sign questions are free and need no signup.
The order that works. Sit the traffic signs test once to find your weak signs. Every wrong answer is saved to your Challenge Bank, so retry only those. Then take the timed mock tests, where signs are mixed in with the rules, the way the real test does it.
When you cannot read the words yet, the shape and colour already tell you the kind of sign. These are the ones the handbook singles out.
| You see | It means |
|---|---|
| Red octagon | Stop. Come to a complete stop |
| Red and white triangle, point down | Yield. Slow down and give way |
| White X on a red background (crossbuck) | Railway crossing ahead |
| Yellow diamond | A warning: a hazard or change in the road ahead |
| Orange diamond | A temporary condition: road work or a detour |
| Green circle | You may, or must, do what is shown |
| Red circle with a line through it | What is shown is not allowed |
| Green rectangle, white letters | Direction and distance |
| Orange triangle with a red border, on a vehicle | A slow-moving vehicle, 40 km/h or less |

The knowledge test has two parts, traffic signs and the rules of the road, and DriveTest requires at least 80% to pass. Practice guides describe the signs part as 20 questions; the province does not publish the split on the pages we can read. Study every sign family rather than a number.
Measured on 382,430 answers on this site, the double-curve warning sign is missed 44% of the time, the detour sign 35%, the one-way sign 34% and the freeway-exits sign 33%. The full top ten is in the table above, each with its picture. Practise them in the traffic signs test.
Regulatory signs are usually rectangles or squares in white or black; a green circle means you may or must, a red circle with a line means not allowed. Warning signs are yellow diamonds, temporary-condition signs are orange diamonds, and information and direction signs are green rectangles with white letters. A red octagon is always stop and a point-down triangle is always yield.
The M1 knowledge test is a separate test with its own handbook, the Official MTO Motorcycle Handbook. Road signs are the same signs on the road, so sign practice helps both, but prepare for the M1 with the M1 practice questions, not only this page.
