Any DriveTest centre in Ontario, walk-in. One office in Toronto takes it by appointment only.
DriveTest centres. The knowledge test is taken at a DriveTest centre with no appointment. Bring your two pieces of original ID, payment and your glasses if you need them, and arrive well before closing: the test typically takes 20 to 30 minutes and there is a counter and a vision test first. DriveTest publishes the official centre finder for the one nearest you. The computerized test is offered in 32 languages, with paper versions available.
ServiceOntario Bay and College, Toronto. 777 Bay Street, Lower Level. The only ServiceOntario office that gives the written test, and it is by appointment only: the province’s own page says walk-ins are not accepted for written tests there.
Online. The test cannot be taken online. The practice can: take a free practice test before you go.
Guides online say you can book the G1 test three ways. The province’s own pages say something simpler. Here it is, test by test.

Pass the test and you leave with a G1: a blue plastic card with your name, address, date of birth, photo and signature, and an expiry date to renew before. Level One of graduated licensing, with these conditions.
The whole path from G1 to a full G, with the two road tests, is on the Ontario driving test page. Everything about getting and keeping the licence is in the G1 licence guide.

Two kinds of office give the test in the city, and they work differently.
Bay and College (777 Bay Street, Lower Level) is a ServiceOntario office. For written tests it is appointment only, and the province’s page says its walk-in services for everything else are limited because of high demand. If you want this office, book it; if you want today, use a DriveTest centre.
DriveTest centres around the city and across the GTA take the knowledge test as a walk-in. Use the official centre finder for the nearest one and its hours, and arrive well before closing. No hours are quoted here because the province’s pages are the only place they are kept current.

Drive a car, van or small truck with a fully licensed driver of four years’ experience beside you, with zero alcohol, every passenger belted, not between midnight and 5 a.m., and not on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways unless a certified instructor is with you.
12 months in most cases, 8 months if you finish a ministry-approved driver education course, before the G2 road test. The whole program must be finished within five years of your G1.
